yesterday, we were talking about dynamic content. 10x10 does exactly that. it pulls images from global news sites, defining the face news with his matrix of images. unfortunately, i dont think it pulls from enough sources, because he gets a lot of repeats. for you nerds, read his technical description. h-o-t-t.

and i just think this is one SEXY flash database.

Here are some of the links that I was talking about before, these are all visualizations of google news.

newsmap

news.stamen.com

And this is a visualization of market information that packs a ton of data into a relativly small space

marketmap

Then this is just the coolest program ever, it is called visual trace route, it works like the terminal command traceroute except it visualizes it over a map of the world, it shows you every computer inbetween your computer and the website you connect to and where all of those computers are located on a map.

visualroute.com

go to the live demo button, if you give them your e-mail address you can use a web version of it for a while. It is definitly worth looking at, it will change how you think of the internet.

Hope these links are useful and have fun,

Jon

10x10 uses such a great idea of how to portray the top news stories of the world. At a glance, a viewer can decide by the used pictures which story they are interested in finding more detail about. And since related stories use the same pictures you can also easily understand what the big issues are at that time. The accompanied words are also a big help in understanding what the story is about. In fact, you could quite possibly learn all you need to know about a certain story by the words used with the picture.

Related to 10x10 ---> Word count developed by the same guy Jonathon J. Harris who has a pretty sweet portfolio site. Also check out "query count" a subdivision of word count!

The word count program reminds me of a program that my friend wrote called the secret lives of numbers, what it does is displays the numbers between 0 and 100,000 and how many times that number appears on the web. It is fun to look at and see that the number 99,999 appears 823,000 times while 99,998 appears only 2,892 times, huge difference.

Here is the url for it:

i just wanted to make a few comments on the google links.

the first one (newsmap), at first glance, i found it to be pretty interesting. perhaps it was my interest as a designer, or a student of media... but i was drawn to it. however, the more i tried to utilize the interface, i found the more frustrated i became. while i completely understood the navigation, the color coding, the system... i felt like data was being lost. perhaps that's the creator's comment on news. BUT, it made me consider the questions: at what point does data get lost in an interface? how many levels of data can be shown before it is too much? what level becomes inefficient?

while the first one seems to be about organization or categorization, the second one was a lot more about relationships. how does the news spread across the week. multiplicity. which actually, was a lot more appealing to me than the previous (despite it's quick attraction). multiplicity and relationship. hot. but, i wonder if the two could be combined to create an even more comprehensive news visualization.

hot, though. but can we be trained to read the news in this manner? will the average user ever be able to stray from a 3 column newspaper (digital or not)? it seems this is one media that has kept some strict traditions despite its transition to digital means.

i found this super interesting because it takes these ideas that we've been talking about (variability) and makes puts in our everyday life. so take 10x10 or internet streams and animate them in physical space. what do you get? an animated pixel. be sure to watch the movie.
