Narrative Environments
Graphic designers are fond of saying their role is about making connections. Where better can all designers begin connecting their disparate disciplines than in the educational purposes of narrative environments?

Inspire [Motivate, Invent, Create]
It is common to hear that the primary motivation for completing a project is ‘the deadline’ or simply ‘getting it done’ and that what is being labored over is x’s (insert instructor) project. This just may be loose language and not borne of meaningful reflection, but even if it is, it still hangs in the air as something that influences how we conceive of our design endeavors—who initiates them, assigns value to them, and holds sway over why we move forward to completion.

(The) Defining Pro
What does ‘professional’ mean to you? Below, Dwight and Jessica opened discussion on Do/Design-It-Yourself. In short (at least by me), visual literacy = super/great/wonderful—bring on more of it now and always for all and every. But their discussion raises the question and possibly the bar for what it means to be a ‘professional’ designer? What does being a Pro mean? Does this word simply set up contradictions and conflicts for what it means to be ‘professional’ or somehow achieve a status/state of the professional in a field such as design—or dare we say art? Is it a dangerous word-concept for a host of possible reasons (please speculate) or one that is a useful notion of a value/skill threshold no matter how ever-changing it may be?

The 3 in the 2 and the 4?
That is: What is it like to explore narrative aspects of 3-D architectural spaces in 2-D and 4-D media? This question is being asked of the FRI AM ARCH students, but I welcome you all into the discussion. This thread will be developing over the semester with hopes beyond that arbitrary keyframe...

The DIY debate: Questions for a Design Community
It's very easy to design most anything today. Computers are very cheap (in comparison to past years), desktop printers are practically free, digital cameras are cheaper than ever. And possibly most important of all is the easier interface of design software and programs. A simple google search could turn up answers to most any question. And with a 24 hour Kinko's around the corner, you can have a professional finished final product in a matter of minutes. The problem with all this? What happens to the Graphic Designer?

Finding the right time/space for innovation
Ever since the Lee's carpet project, I've been dying for design problems beyond the school setting, team work, and multi-disciplinary peers. Luckily, I've had the chance to experience one of the most renowned design firms that does exactly that—innovation through collaboration. During my brief time at IDEO, I've had the chance to talk to several peers about how they have adjusted/reacted to such a collaborative environment.

Seniors: Questions About Your Future Plans
As many of you may already know, I returned to Paxar for work this summer. They are a company that makes printed labels. They are very corporate and have plants located globally. I'm enjoying the work there this summer so far, and I get the feeling that they will want me to return after I graduate. However, it's not the kind of job I really want.

Media Review: Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control
400 and 517, I’d like you all to watch Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control by Errol Morris. Take note of the range of footage and how it is used to illustrate the greater narrative. What is is the role of sound? Does this film meet your expectations of a documentary? How is it like graphic design? All should write an in-depth review of the film here and discuss each other’s comments.

Media Review: Kiki Smith
Those of you in GD400 are well into your information mapping and/or story-boarding. As you move through this stage of the process, make sure you continue to focus on a clear set of goals. Question your site structure. Is it operating more like a database, narrative, or hybrid? To this end, I would like you to read/view MoMa/Kiki Smith and post a detailed review of the work. How does it function as a database and a narrative? What holds the storyline? What keeps your orientation—are you engaged? What particular modes of writing and visualization are employed and to what effect? Please post your reviews on this thread prior to studio on the Monday, Feb. the 7th.

practice isn’t perfect
the topic of practice came up in the new media thread, and Mr. Brock asked me to expand upon it. what do we hope to find in practice, once we leave the slippery marble steps of the c.o.d., diploma in hand? what have been your experiences in practice? what are your fears and hopes about starting or continuing it? and, as past and future practitioners, how can we shape the culture of graphic design practice more to those ends?

a typographic topic that has cropped up several times over the years is the issue of uppercase (uc) versus lowercase (lc) letterforms. historically i know of three different designers wrestling with this topic, and trying to resolve inconsistencies between certain uc and lc forms.
